Potential Implications for Expansion of Freeze- Tolerant Eucalyptus Plantations on Water Resources in the Southern United States

چکیده
The potential expansion of freeze-tolerant (FT) Eucalyptus plantations in the United States has raised concerns about the implications for water resources. Modeling was used to examine the potential effects of expanding the distribution of FT Eucalyptus plantations in US Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 8b and greater on water yield (Q). Analyses focused on two scales: the stand scale and the regional scale at the 12-digit Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC) watershed. Results suggested that the stand-level implications of planting FT Eucalyptus on Q could vary by location, the land cover type before Eucalyptus establishment, and the hydrologic conditions of the planting site and surrounding area. Compared with that for some pine plantations, Q at the stand level could be equal to or reduced by as much as to 130 mm year 1 (a reduction of 9 –16% of precipitation) near the end of the rotation or on sites when leaf area index (LAI) is 4 m m 2 and reduced by as much as 500 mm year 1 (a reduction of 33– 63% of precipitation) when LAI is 5 m m . In contrast, at the scale of conversion indicated by an economic analysis as most likely (e.g., 20% conversion of conifer to FT eucalyptus), reductions on Q at the 12-digit HUC scale will be negligible.

Biotech Eucalyptus can sustainably address society’s need for wood: the example of freeze tolerant Eucalyptus in the southeastern U.S
Background Eucalyptus species are among the fastest growing woody plants in the world and represent about 8% of all planted forests (~18 million hectares) grown in 90 countries [1]. Only a limited number of species are grown commercially, and these have been the focus of extensive breeding to improve desirable wood properties such as basic density, cellulose content, fiber length and improved g...
متن کاملEvaluating Potential Changes in Fire Risk from Eucalyptus Plantings in the Southern United States
Renewed interest in short-rotation woody crops for bioenergy and bioproducts has prompted a reevaluation of the Eucalyptus species for the southern United States. One question that arises about the potential effects of introducing a nonnative species is what effect will there be on fire behavior. Our approximate answer based on modeling fire behavior using the Fuel Characteristic Classification...

Nigeria is one of the most malnourished and hunger ridden in the league of developing countries; according to reports of Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of United Nations estimated daily animal protein intake for developing countries averaged at 4.5 g/head/day at the beginning of this century which has hardly risen to 10 g/head/day into the second decade of the century in Nigeria. This...
متن کاملEstimations of evapotranspiration in an age sequence of Eucalyptus plantations in subtropical China
Eucalyptus species are widely planted for reforestation in subtropical China. However, the effects of Eucalyptus plantations on the regional water use remain poorly understood. In an age sequence of 2-, 4- and 6-year-old Eucalyptus plantations, the tree water use and soil evaporation were examined by linking model estimations and field observations. Results showed that annual evapotranspiration...

Introduction: Higher personal mastery is associated with better physical functioning, wellbeing, and longevity among older populations. However, few studies have focused on whether personal mastery is protective against mortality among older adults living with diabetes over time. Methods: A total of 1,779 participants were identified from an off-year survey of the Health and Retirement Study....
